What is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a procedure in which a safe and deeply-penetrating acid formula is applied to the face by a medical professional. In two weeks or less, the entirety of the tired and unhealthy dermal level will peel and slough off, revealing the healthy and rejuvenated layer beneath.
Our clients from Aventura and surrounding areas choose chemical peels as they are a nonsurgical and topical alternative to other more invasive surgeries and procedures.
However, in comparison to a more aggressive lasers, chemical peels are lower-cost and require little down-time in recovery, making them a frequently-chosen alternative in our Aventura office.
Chemical Peels come in three levels for patients of varying needs and skin goals.
Level 1: Superficial Chemical Peels
This peel is often offered using a mild acid or dry ice.
The solution is left on for no longer than 10 minutes and the patient may only feel a mild burning or tingling sensation.
Typically, no anesthetic is used during a superficial peel and even patients with sensitive skin cite very little discomfort. This peel is best for patients with no real skin conditions or concerns who just want to brighten and rejuvenate – especially before a big event.
Level 2: Medium Chemical Peels
A medium chemical peel peel is provided using trichloroacetic acid, or TCA and is equivalent to a 2nd degree burn. This procedure takes 40 minutes and because it is longer and more intense, some patients elect for an oral sedative to manage prolonged discomfort. This peel level is recommended for patients with consistent, moderate to severe acne or acne scarring.
Level 3: Deep Chemical Peels
This high level peel is not recommended for every patient.
A deep chemical peel will also result in a 2nd degree burn, like its medium counterpart.
This level of peel is not recommended for dark-skinned patients as unwanted bleaching can occur.
A deep peel will be used only for the face as it can be excessive on larger body areas. Most patients should only ever have one deep chemical peel.
How to Prepare for a Chemical Peel
For the weeks leading up to a chemical peel, Dr. Vega recommends that patients apply a quality sunscreen and a specially prescribed skin cream 2x daily to protect and condition the skin.
Our clients are choosing chemical peels to fresh-up the texture, pigment, and overall health and youth of their skin.
