A Brazilian butt lift, sometimes referred to as a BBL, is an incredibly popular cosmetic procedure. At Biotech Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center in Aventura, FL, we are proud to offer this and several other cosmetic procedures to help our clients feel as self-confident as possible. Today, we’re taking a closer look at who generally qualifies for this procedure to help you determine whether it will be effective for you.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift?
Someone Who Doesn’t Smoke
There are a lot of factors that are considered when determining who is a good Brazilian Butt Lift candidate. One thing we look for is people who do not smoke. There are numerous preparation and aftercare guidelines you will need to follow to qualify for surgery. One of the most important preparation steps is to not consume any form of nicotine, including through the use of cigarettes, chewing tobacco, or smoking cessation tools.
If you’re a smoker, you may be healthy enough to qualify for surgery. However, you must be able to go two weeks without consuming nicotine prior to surgery. This goes a long way in ensuring your blood pressure is normal at the time of your procedure. You also must be able to go two weeks without consuming nicotine following your procedure. Let us know during your initial consultation if you smoke and whether you think you can go a month without smoking.
Someone Who Has a Normal Body Mass Index
We also look for people who have a normal body mass index when determining who is a good fit for this procedure. If you’re not sure whether you have a normal body mass index, step on a scale. Then, plug your weight, height, sex, and age into an online body mass index calculator. If your body mass index is normal (18.5 to 24.9) or overweight (25 to 29.9), then there is a good chance that you will qualify for this procedure.
If your body mass index is 18.4 or lower, then you probably won’t have enough excess subcutaneous fat to be harvested for implantation into the buttocks. If you suffer from obesity, then you may not be satisfied with the liposuction results of the procedure. Furthermore, if you are underweight or suffering from obesity, it is less likely that you will be healthy enough to undergo surgery.
Someone Who Is Relatively Healthy
It is very important for anyone considering cosmetic surgery to be in relatively good health. The primary reason it is important to be healthy to qualify for surgery is that certain medical conditions can affect the procedure. The secondary reason it is important to be healthy at the time of surgery is that the healthier you are, the faster you can expect to heal from surgery.
During your initial consultation, we will discuss your health history and present health to ensure surgery will be safe for you. We take into account a multitude of factors, including your health history, your present health, and all of the drugs and supplements you currently take. Depending on the pharmaceuticals you’re currently taking, you may need to speak with your primary care physician and find out if it is safe for you to stop taking your drugs temporarily.
Pharmaceuticals That Should Be Avoided Prior to Surgery
There are several drugs and dietary supplements that should be avoided prior to surgery for your safety. For example, you need to discontinue the use of any drugs or supplements that were designed to act as blood-thinners or have the potential side effect of blood-thinning. Prior to your procedure, you will not be able to take NSAIDs to alleviate pain. You also will not be able to take an MAOI to treat your depression. Supplements that are off the table include:
- Vitamin E supplements
- Fish oil supplements
- Ginkgo biloba supplements
- Garlic supplements
Medical Conditions That May Preclude You From Surgery
For the greatest possible chance of qualifying for a Brazilian butt lift, it is very important that you are free from chronic medical conditions. Certain medical conditions, like diabetes, can affect your procedure or slow down your recovery process significantly. Acute medical conditions can also disqualify you from surgery.
For example, you will be considered a poor fit for this procedure if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The reason why you shouldn’t consider surgery while you are breastfeeding is that recovery from both surgery and breastfeeding take a massive energy toll on your body. You will also be considered a poor fit for surgery if your skin is irritated at the time of surgery in your buttocks or donor areas.
Someone Who Can Follow All Preparation Instructions
Furthermore, when determining who is a good Brazilian butt lift candidate, we strongly consider the ability to follow all preparation guidelines. Not consuming tobacco or smoking cessation products is one of the most important preparation steps. However, it is by no means the only preparation step. For instance, if you receive general anesthesia prior to surgery, you will need to fast for eight hours and dry fast for two hours.
As another example, you will need to arrange for a ride home after surgery and arrange for someone to stay with you and help you recover. Another very important preparation step you must be able to take is to ensure you are hydrated and well-nourished when you come in for your procedure. This will set you up for a safe, successful surgery and improve your odds of a rapid recovery.
Someone Who Can Follow All Aftercare Guidelines
It is also crucial that you can follow all aftercare guidelines to ensure that you qualify for this procedure. There are a number of restrictions you will need to adhere to during the first couple of months post-op to ensure you recover as quickly as possible. Following all aftercare guidelines will also help you see your ideal results faster.
During your initial consultation, we will advise you on all of the aftercare guidelines you will need to follow. For example, you must be able to sleep on your stomach for several weeks following your procedure. You also must be able to abstain from alcohol consumption for two weeks following your procedure.
Someone Who Has Realistic Expectations About the Recovery Process
Before we determine whether you are a good candidate for this procedure, we need to make sure that you have realistic expectations about the recovery process. To ensure this, we will give you a general recovery timeline that you can expect to follow. Some of it is relatively easy, like making sure you have someone stay with you for the first 24 to 72 hours post-op to help you recover and taking a week or two off from work.
However, other parts of the recovery process may be a bit harder. For example, it would really benefit you if you ate at maintenance during the first few months following your procedure. The reason it is so important to maintain your weight after surgery is that there is a strong possibility your body will burn fat in your buttocks for fuel if you eat at a caloric deficit. This will affect your results negatively.
Someone Who Has Realistic Expectations About the Results
It is also important that you have realistic expectations about the results after surgery for it to be right for you. During your initial consultation, we will evaluate your areas of concern and talk about what you’d like to get out of surgery. You need to understand several things about your final results to be considered a good fit for surgery.
For example, you need to understand that the liposuction results of this procedure are considered permanent. If you’re at least 25 years old, you don’t have to worry about your body growing new fat cells in the donor area to replace the adipose tissue harvested for implantation.
